An Interview With Sheila Shaw - UHD

An Interview With Sheila Shaw - UHD

PSA - Lethbridge Local Artist - Sheila Shaw When you wake up in the morning and you flick on your TV, look at your phone, switch on the radio or do things like, I don't know, put on clothes, squeeze the shampoo bottle, take coffee beans/grounds out of a package of some kind, drive your car, or do literally almost anything... did you know that, in no small part, an artist has had their hand in that experience for you. They've designed the clothes, the branding, the packaging, the shape, the tone, etc. They've conceived of the engineering, chosen materials, tried and tested many iterations, toiled for years to hone their craft and so much more, just to make your life a bit more comfortable and a whole lot more beautiful. Artists are present in most of our experiences, believe it or not. We wouldn't have a fraction of a decimal point of what we have as humans without the input of artists and creative minds bringing those experiences, tools, ideas and applications to you. And yet, artists are so often neglected, minimized, scoffed at and disregarded. Despite the beauty artists bring to our world they really aren't given a fair shake. Artistry is one of our most human traits. When you go on vacation you visit iconic architecture (art), you seek out the best restaurants (art), you go dancing at local music venues (art), you stay in a resort or hotel trimmed with ART, because artists are intrinsically important to our communities, our world and our lives. Sheila Shaw is no exception. This nuanced abstract Métis painter from Gift Lake Métis Settlement in north central Alberta creates mesmerizing abstract paintings that propel you into a dreamworld and pay homage to the ancestral history and creativity of the Métis people. Through abstract and experimental techniques Sheila invites the mind to wander into new territories that tickle a part of the brain in desperate need of attention. DO NOT SLEEP on this local artist, her work is truly a wondrous experience to witness in person. Get yourself a "Shaw" and thank me later. An Interview With Gary Uchikura - UHD

An Interview With Gary Uchikura - UHD

PSA - Lethbridge Local Artist - Gary Uchikura There are some people in Lethbridge who carry a spirit and an awareness with them, whether cultivated or inherited, that radiates a profound genuine beauty, kindness, respect and authenticity that everyone else in the community gravitates toward and seeks to emulate. If they don't, they should. Local potter and grade AAA human-being, Gary Uchikura, is one of them. If you're not knowing him I'm here to let you know. I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Gary a few months back and chatting for a while about his process, his philosophy, his influences and his ambitions. Just being around this man is like a warm hug from a happy friend. 👀 [Watch this short film to get the joke]. 👀 Gary spoke at length about his approach to pottery and shared how he invites others to "embrace" his work through the impressions he leaves in his vessels - among other things. If you're lucky enough to own one of Gary's works you know exactly what I mean. I always leave hanging out with Gary with a smile and often catch myself smiling when I drink my morning coffee or tea out of my "Garyuchi" mug. Simply put, Gary makes me smile and in a world like ours, that is worth more than gold. Thanks for the chat and for being you, Gary. Always a pleasure. Truly.
